Golf

For golfers, the West Country has some challenging courses. And when you stay with us at the Saunton Sands Hotel in North Devon, you'll be perfectly placed to enjoy a round or two on some of the best.

On the hotel's doorstep lie the twin courses of Saunton Golf Club. The 6,700 yard East Course, considered one of the world's top 100 courses, offers middle and lower handicap golfers some unique challenges. Play is at the club's discretion, but hotel guests with handicap certificates will be made most welcome.

For less regular players, the Portmore Golf Club in Barnstaple has excellent public facilities including a driving range, practice putting green and the 'Landkey' Par 3, 9 hole approach course along with the 18 hole 'Barum' course.

A pilgrimage to the Royal North Devon Golf Club at Westward Ho! is also an essential part of the golfer's itinerary. Founded in 1864, the club operates the world's oldest course, providing a fine test of classic links golf.

A test not only of golf but of stamina is available at Ilfracombe Golf Club. Negotiating the course successfully demands forethought and skill. Playing 36 holes in a day is a notable achievement.
